What's So Funny About Unemployment?

Good news

I’m going back to work! 🙂

Starting tomorrow, I have a temporary job. It will include writing and research, two of my strengths.

The temporary agency isn’t sure how long the assignment will last; it could be a few weeks or a few months. But the pay rate is good (much better than unemployment) and it’s an easy commute from my house.

So wish me luck (and remind me to look for a permanent job in the meantime)!

Quote of the Day

leave a comment »

Once again, it’s Friday, and it’s time for our Quote of the Day (week).

Today’s Quote of the Day is from John F. Kennedy:

“We believe that if men have the talent to invent new machines that put men out of work, they have the talent to put those men back to work.”

An update

I apologize for not updating this blog this week. I was on vacation last weekend, and I’ve been busy volunteering and job hunting the last few days.

I need a job. The good news is, I have a lead or two on some freelance work, thankfully. However, I’d prefer a job with steady hours and benefits.

Happy Friday and happy Memorial Day weekend, everyone!

Before I take off for a weekend in Northern Michigan (known to we Michiganders as “Up North”), I leave you with this Quote of the Day:

“Unemployment diminishes people. Leisure enlarges them.” — Mason Cooley.

Laid off? Wear a wristband.

leave a comment »

Two Florida women are now selling wristbands saying “Laid Off Need A Job.Com” over the Internet. For only $3, you too can wear your unemployed status on your sleeve (well, actually, your wrist).

The wristbands are designed to help the laid off network and advertise their status, according to their jobless and underemployed creators.

According to the Detroit Free Press, they’ve already sold up to 6,000 wristbands in three months and recouped their initial investment.

I haven’t decided yet whether or not to buy and wear one of these. The testimonials on their web site say people have received jobs from wearing these. Yet, I’m shy enough not to want to call attention to myself by wearing one.

Thinking positively

leave a comment »

I just got an e-mail from an old friend saying I should stop thinking of myself as “unemployed” and instead think of myself as “ready to be employed.”

That’s an interesting way to put it.

I admit I have been a bit down this last week: I received a few rejections out there in the job market, and let myself think negatively. I need to think positively that there is something out there for me and for everyone else who is in similar circumstances.

So thanks for the reminder, old friend.

Quote of the Day

It’s Friday, and you and I have survived yet another week of unemployment.

It’s time once again for the WSFAU Quote of the Day.

Today’s quote is by an unknown author:

“An ‘acceptable’ level of unemployment means that the government economist to whom it is acceptable still has a job.”
