Freebies and deals for Michigan’s unemployed

leave a comment »

Today’s Detroit Free Press/Freep.com business section has just published a list of free/reduced price offers for those of us who are unemployed in Michigan.

It has everything from free resumes to lower prices on 50 basic food items at Kroger to three free months of checking at one bank if you’re jobless.

Here’s a link to the list.

Of course, we here at WSFAU don’t charge you a thing. 😉

Need some support? Try the church.

with 2 comments

Today’s Detroit Free Press has an article about area churches which sponsor career ministries and support groups for the unemployed.

I’ve attended one of these ministries/support groups in my area for some time now. It’s been a great help to me and to others.

These groups typically offer networking opportunities, e-mail lists, and meetings with speakers talking about job- and career-related topics.

Take a look at the article or at www.ctsministries.org to find out more.

Couples warned not to let the economy bankrupt their love lives: Detroit News

From the Detroit News: An opinion piece headlined “Don’t go bankrupt in the boudoir” warns couples to not let the economy affect their love lives:

I must admit, I’ve let the economy affect my love life. I canceled my eHarmony account this winter (those monthly fees were a luxury I couldn’t quite justify). Besides, I was thinking: “Gee, who’s going to date an unemployed woman like me?” Well, gee, someone might …

Uh-oh ….

with one comment

I had a very busy week. Looking back at my calendar, I had networking meetings, volunteer work, Toastmasters, doctor’s appointments, an entrepreneurship seminar, a meeting with my personal job coach, a professional group meeting, and a job interview. Plus posts to this blog. All good, right? 🙂

So last night, after sitting around catching my breath, it hit me: I totally missed my appointment and make-up times to call MARVIN this week. Which means I missed receiving my unemployment payment this week. 😦

As a few friends pointed out when I pointed out my faux pau on Facebook, it happens and I should call in early next Thursday during make-up time.  I should do it Thursday; I’ll get my money sooner and Friday’s too close to the Fourth of July holiday. So I’ve marked my calendar to do it first thing Thursday — which should be a slower week. 😉

More good news and good jobs for Michigan

leave a comment »

For the second time in two days, there’s been major job news in Michigan.

Today, GE announced it’s opening a tech center to bring about 1,200 high-tech manufacturing jobs to southeastern Michigan.

Two of the best parts of today’s GE announcement — besides creating more jobs in a region desperate for them? They’re “green” jobs, and they’ll pay as much as $100,000 a year.

Here’s a link to the Detroit News story:

Thanks, GE. I already was grateful to you for making my lightbulbs, phone, microwave oven, and TV. And for owning NBC, which broadcasts “30 Rock” for me to watch on my GE TV.

Quote of the Day/Week

leave a comment »

It’s Friday morning, and it’s time once again for our weekly WSFAU Quote of the Day.

Today’s words of working/unemployment wisdom are from Theodore Roosevelt:

“I don’t pity any man who does hard work worth doing. I admire him. I pity the creature who does not work, at whichever end of the social scale he may regard himself as being.”

Good news for Michigan

leave a comment »

Tired of reading bad news today (celebrity deaths, weird governors, health care in crisis, the bad economy)?

Here’s some good news, at least if you live in southeastern Michigan: General Motors has apparently decided to build a new car here in Michigan.

Yes, it appears Government Motors decided to do the right thing by Detroit and keep its Orion Township assembly plant open to build a new subcompact car. And keep some of its jobs here in Michigan  instead of moving them to Spring Hill, Tenn., or Janesville, Wis.

Not that I have anything against Spring Hill — I’ve owned two Saturns which were built in Spring Hill — or anything against Wisconsin.

But Michigan is the home of the automotive industry. The Detroit area is full of auto workers, engineers, and suppliers who need work. This plant will give them much-needed work.
