Quote of the Day

I’m taking a break from my job hunting (more about that later) to post today’s quote from Dean Charles R. Brown:

“We have too many people who live without working, and we have altogether too many who work without living.”

More unemployment benefits?

leave a comment »

There’s a bill in the House of Representatives to give unemployed workers in the hardest-hit states — like Michigan — an additional extension of unemployment benefits.

Bill would offer more unemployment benefits | detnews.com | The Detroit News

On one hand, as some might say, extending benefits even further may not encourage some long-term unemployed persons to take action to become employed again.

On the other hand, as the long-term unemployed would reply, it’s tough to find a job out there right now.

Sunday

leave a comment »

It’s a quiet Sunday here at WSFAU.

I’m torn between staying inside to fill out even more job applications or going to the grand opening of a new Target store near my house. Not that I have much money to spend at that new store, but I love Target.

But before I leave, I want to tell you about going to fill out applications at two “upscale” department stores north of me on Friday afternoon.  Walking into those quiet luxurious stores to fill out applications was like walking into another world; one filled with very expensive designer clothing and accessories I’d never be able to afford. Not even with an employee discount and sale prices. And both of those stores, like many establishments these days, wanted me to fill out applications on their web sites. Which I still haven’t done.

Frankly, I think Target would be more my style.

Quote of the Day

It’s officially Friday — very early in the morning on Friday.

Before I go back to sleep and get ready to go to a job fair, I’m posting this week’s Quote of the Day.

Today I have a little Shakespeare for you:

“You take my life when you do take the means whereby I live.”

Scam alert: Avoid calling the “Job Line”

with 2 comments

I received a warning about this in my job network support group e-mails today. Then I got it myself this afternoon just as I posted my last post:

There’s a recorded message call making the rounds of the Detroit area. It calls you and tells you to “Call the Job Line, 976-4477, for information on local, state, and federal jobs.” It’s a man’s voice which repeats this message for about 30 seconds before automatically hanging up on you. My caller ID had no information on where this call originated from, either.

No matter how desperate you are for job information, don’t call this number! 976 numbers are pay services, and you will be charged high rates for the call.

News from the unemployment agency

with one comment

Good news: The unemployment agency sent me its determination today over my missed call to MARVIN. I didn’t have to wait eight weeks for their decision after all. Plus they sent me a form letter about how I may soon be eligible for extended benefits after nearly 26 weeks of unemployment unenjoyment here in the recession capital of America.

Bad news: They determined I’m ineligible for unemployment benefits for the weeks for which I missed the call to MARVIN. Apparently job hunting and interviewing “is not considered good cause for failure to report timely” under their rules/regulations/laws.

What the ….?

Yes, I know I’m supposed to call MARVIN on time. If I didn’t know that before, I surely know it now.

However, aren’t unemployed people supposed to keep busy job hunting and networking?

So, I ask you, Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency, what is an acceptable reason for not calling MARVIN/reporting for benefits? Being on my deathbed? Getting hit by a bus? Being on my deathbed after getting hit by a bus?

Those probably aren’t acceptable reasons, either. You’d determine I could still dial the phone if I were sick in bed.

Meanwhile, I’m still broke.  I haven’t been posting entries to this blog this week because I’ve been very busy applying for every halfway decent job I can find at the mall, on the Internet, or on craigslist.

And my family and I are taking turns reassuring each other that I’ll be okay.

Thanks, Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency. You’ll be hearing from me again soon.

Quote of the Day

We’re a day late for this week’s Quote of the Day. However, we haven’t forgotten it entirely. This week’s quote is from George Bernard Shaw:

“A man who has no office to go to — I don’t care who he is — is a trial of which you can have no conception.”
