What's So Funny About Unemployment?

Thoughts on a “jobless recovery”

Earlier this morning, I saw Michigan’s governor on Meet the Press as part of a panel of politicians and other talking heads talking about the country’s “jobless recovery.”

I only caught the tail end of the discussion (I was coming home from church and eating a late breakfast). However, I tuned in just in time to see Gov. Granholm wax optimistic about recent (national?) monthly job loss numbers actually being down from where they were at the beginning of the year.

Well, she has a job here in Michigan (until her term ends, and then she’ll probably get some other cushy political appointment or consulting job).

I don’t have a full-time job here in Michigan. I may, reluctantly, leave Michigan, if I get a job in another state.

Even though employers seem reluctant to create new jobs — or replace the workers they laid off at the start of this slump — I’m trying to be optimistic that the economy will recover enough to create a job for me, and soon. My optimism varies: Some days, my (job) glass is half-full, some days, it’s half-empty. Some days, I just have half a glass.

But as I’ve been told, I only need one job.
