What's So Funny About Unemployment?

A funny little unemployment blog for your (un) enjoyment

The End?

with 4 comments

It’s been a long time since I posted here at WSFAU, for a variety of reasons.

Such as: Last January, I was very sick. As in, the ER doctor told me I could have died. Thankfully, I didn’t die. But I did spend a week in the hospital. And I’ve had to see doctors and take drugs and lab tests regularly ever since then. But I feel much, much better now, thanks.

And after years of blogging about unemployment, I tired of blogging about unemployment. So I did other things. I worked part-time, I looked for other job opportunities, I kept going to Toastmasters and serving on the board of the Friends of the Ferndale Library. Last month, I started another blog.

Yesterday, I received a job offer from Kelly Services to be a call center representative for my favorite computer company.  I’m also beginning to volunteer my writing services for a few local organizations. They and I hope the pro bono work will lead me to other opportunities.

So this looks like it may be my final post here. I’ll keep WSFAU up and linked to my new blog, though. (After all, I paid for the domain name.)

“The staff” and I thank you for reading WSFAU and its Facebook page.

And if you’re unemployed, you’re in my thoughts and prayers.

My chance to be a rock star at work

leave a comment »

While we were sitting around the house and watching the Saturday night horror movie show in our pj’s (hey, we’re relaxing after a busy week), a member of our ever-vigilant staff saw a very cool job posting for us on Twitter.

So what is it? Library assistant at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum!

Sure, we’d have to move to Cleveland. But think of it: It’s our chance to be rock stars! 😉

News I haven’t told you …

At a party the other evening, a few friends told me they read this blog and liked it. (Thank you!) Which reminded me I hadn’t posted anything in a few weeks. Please accept my apologies for your not having anything new to read here in a while.

Actually, I’ve been holding out on all of you: I’ve been working.

At the start of June, I began a part-time temporary job. I’m working at the circulation desk of one of my county community college’s libraries. (For you non-librarians, “working at the circulation desk” means I’ve been checking books in and out and helping students with various questions and problems.) The pay’s good and I’m gaining experience I need for other library jobs. I’m happy there.

The only thing is, I just don’t know how long it’s going to last. At first I was told it would be two weeks. Then the assignment was extended for another two weeks. I don’t know if this is going to be my last week on the job or if it will go on for a while longer. Such is the nature of temporary work.

And of course, there’s another thing (or two): Since it’s a temporary job, I haven’t quite felt like announcing “I have a job!” here. Although I do, indeed, have a job. And since I’ve been working, I’ve had less time to write here.

I’m having a nice weekend

leave a comment »

Even though my house sitting gig has ended and the weather is now unseasonably cold, I’m having a nice weekend.

The high point  — so far — was last night. I went to a comedy film festival at an old movie house, had some laughs with some good friends — and won some much-needed cash in the 50/50 drawing at intermission. A win-win. Especially since the non-profit theatre society got the other half of the money.  🙂

Before then on Saturday morning, I took a workshop at my new favorite store on using my new favorite electronic device. After the workshop I had a cup of coffee. And, later, a different kind of coffee.

This afternoon, I’m stopping by an interesting-sounding event at my local library. How can any bibliophile resist  “The Day of Books and Roses”? I sure can’t. (If you can’t, it’s from 2-7 p.m. at the Ferndale Public Library in fashionable Ferndale, Mich.)

Hope you’re also having a good weekend.

Book review: “Over 40 & You’re Hired!”

As a job hunter who just happens to be a few years over 40, I found a very good book on my library’s  New Book shelves last week.

“Over 40 & You’re Hired! Secrets to Landing a Great Job,” by author and career counselor Robin Ryan, is a brand-new job guide. It’s a perfect reference and pep talk for all of us unemployed Baby Boomers who have ever wondered if we’re “too old” to get a (good) job.

It stresses several things: networking to find the “hidden job market;” making your resumé, cover letters, and personal appearance the best they can all be; keeping up with technology (I’ve got a blog, I can do that!); negotiating your salary; and how to answer the toughest and worst interview questions.

Ryan believes those of us over 40 can get good jobs with great salaries. Her new book tells you exactly how to go after and get them. Look for “Over 40 & You’re Hired!” in your library or bookstore or on Amazon.com.

Things I’ve done today

I’ve been busy accomplishing things today.

First, I went to my first Chamber of Commerce networking event to tell members about my new business venture — and got two offers of help from the chamber director and from a Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) business counselor.

Then I went to the local library and did my weekly volunteer work — and I actually worked with some patrons today instead of just books.

And after that, I took a trip to Borders to spend a Christmas gift card on a book on small business management (yes, Christmas in June).  I came home and finally got my new wireless mouse to work! Transforming it from being the useless $19 paperweight it had been for a week and a half.

It gets better: After I celebrated having a working mouse, my phone rang. It was a college library I’d applied at last week, wanting to know if I was available for a phone interview. Of course I was.

It’s been a good day. 🙂
