What I’ve been doing this fall

leave a comment »

Gee, it’s a little dusty in here. Guess it has been awhile since I’ve written. Sorry about that.

I’ve been busy this fall. I have had one or two short-term temporary jobs and some substitute teaching assignments. I’d prefer a full-time permanent job, but hey, it’s work and it’s money.

Toastmasters has also kept me busy. It’s fall speech contest season. I’m not competing; however I did organize one contest and am assisting with other contests. Until the end of this month.

Lastly, I just can’t stay out of The Apple Store. Against my better judgment, I bought another new toy there a couple of weeks ago. I’m really enjoying it and its various apps.

News I haven’t told you …

leave a comment »

At a party the other evening, a few friends told me they read this blog and liked it. (Thank you!) Which reminded me I hadn’t posted anything in a few weeks. Please accept my apologies for your not having anything new to read here in a while.

Actually, I’ve been holding out on all of you: I’ve been working.

At the start of June, I began a part-time temporary job. I’m working at the circulation desk of one of my county community college’s libraries. (For you non-librarians, “working at the circulation desk” means I’ve been checking books in and out and helping students with various questions and problems.) The pay’s good and I’m gaining experience I need for other library jobs. I’m happy there.

The only thing is, I just don’t know how long it’s going to last. At first I was told it would be two weeks. Then the assignment was extended for another two weeks. I don’t know if this is going to be my last week on the job or if it will go on for a while longer. Such is the nature of temporary work.

And of course, there’s another thing (or two): Since it’s a temporary job, I haven’t quite felt like announcing “I have a job!” here. Although I do, indeed, have a job. And since I’ve been working, I’ve had less time to write here.

It’s been a busy week

with 2 comments

I have a few minutes this morning to say I’ve been very busy this week.

Going back to work, even to train for a temporary job, will do that to a person.

The first day of training for the Census job was mostly paperwork. Plus we took our Census oath of office (yes, we’re sworn government employees, sworn to keep your information private) and got fingerprinted.

Yesterday, our class practiced interviewing people. Today and tomorrow, we’re to go out into the field for some actual interviews.

Plus I’ve been working on some freelance assignments and going to Toastmasters in my spare time (what spare time, I ask?).

Speaking of Toastmasters, tomorrow and Saturday is our Toastmasters district spring conference in Southfield. So no rest then for the busy, either. But it’ll be fun. (At least I think those things are fun.)

Time for me to say words I haven’t said in awhile: I have to leave for work soon. 😉

Eight weeks of hard times

with 2 comments

On the suggestion of a friend, I went to the unemployment agency’s problem resolution office yesterday afternoon.

After waiting for about an hour and a half for my number to be called in a room full of fellow unemployed people, the agent told me she couldn’t tell me anything in person. I would have to wait up to eight weeks for a letter telling me whether or not I received my unemployment for the missing weeks. And the remaining four weeks of my claim would also be delayed.

“Eight weeks?” I said. “But I need that money now! Why didn’t they tell me that yesterday over the phone?”

She didn’t know.

I spent the rest of the day and night in shock.

I am broke.

I have no money, except for a few dollars and change in my wallet and jeans pocket, the change in my piggy bank, and whatever I have in bottle deposits. I’m going to have to raid my 401(k) to pay the bills — if they’ll let me.

I may well have to move in with friends or family soon. Not to mention ask them for money.

I am signed up with a few temporary agencies for freelance and temp work. I’ve been calling them since yesterday with no luck. I’m signing up with a few more agencies today.

I don’t like the Michigan Unemployment Agency.

I hate being broke and desperate.
